It’s surprising, perhaps, but the most stylish women have far smaller wardrobes than everyone else. Referred to as a capsule wardrobe, it contains a few incredibly versatile items. So how can fewer clothes mean looking better?

Seasonal changes

Rather than hanging on to old summer dresses or winter jumpers, the most stylish women get rid of clothes that are no longer in style or don’t fit and update their wardrobe each season. Some key items will stay for years, whilst with tops and accessories, it’s a matter of out with the old and in with the new. The rule of thumb is to get rid of the same amount you bring in. This helps you dispose of items that in all truthfulness you will never wear again. At first, get rid of two items for every one you buy, until you have a manageable selection.

Quality over quantity

A truly stylish woman will have two designer tops that can be accessorized in lots of ways, rather than 20 tops from cheap high street retailers that really don’t stack up when it comes to quality fabrics, fit and design. It’s the same with jeans – a really good pair of designer jeans is worth far more than a pile of cheap jeans which don’t fit properly. Next time you go on a shopping ‘spree’, consider spending your entire budget on one key designer item, rather than tonnes of cheap clothes.

The ‘rule of three’

You don’t need lots of evening dresses, just three; one that is acceptable for work functions, one that can be worn to anything from dinner to a cocktail party and one that makes a statement. During summer, you also need three additional dresses, including one that is thrown over a bathing suit in the day and worn with heels in the evening, like a red maxi dress such as this chic red maxi dress at AX Paris. This ‘rule of three’ applies to everything, even your goals in life.

The reason the most stylish women have smaller wardrobes is that they are better at discriminating between timeless pieces and matching them well with seasonal additions. The style is about so much more than the latest trend, it’s about finding clothes that are ‘you’, that fit well and can be worn in a number of ways.
