Although it seems like Fields was doing his job correctly, he wasn’t focused enough on Ford’s core business as their popular products started to become dated and lagged behind rivals bringing in long-range electric cars to the market. The electric car Tesla ended up passing Ford in market value and Ford’s stock price has fallen almost 40 percent since Fields became CEO in July 2014.
The CEO at Ford is actually retiring and Ford Motor Co. Executive Chairman Bill Ford mentioned that Fields is an outstanding leader and he was the right person to lead Ford since he expanded into new business areas like making self-driving shuttles, because he is a visionary and knows how to remake a business. Many car companies include Ford are now facing increasing competition from Google, Uber and others as they try to plot their next moves.
