Are you ready to put your phone in super mode? With rooting you can get a faster mobile with new opportunities. We can already warn you that this is a rather technical procedure. You lose the warranty on your phone. But fully legal, it is.
Should you be a super user in Android?
Have you decided to root?
Perhaps you can phone the root by a “one click root” solution, and as the name reveals there is then quite easy for them.
In this guide we will go through what you should know about rooting. However, you should have some control already, what the different commands do before hammering them into the terminal.
We do not come with a step-by-step guide to just root your phone. There are countless devices with different versions of firmware and bootloader, and things change for each model and version. After reading this guide you should still have had knowledge of what you do when you follow a step-by-step guide for your particular phone.
A memory card is very handy for the installation process and to backup.
Backup
It is often advisable to begin by taking a backup. Google’s synchronization service ensures that the calendar entries and contacts are synchronized, but not images, messages, music, documents and other things you may have lying on your phone. To take care of this, you should either bring out everything manually or use a program that backs up the contents.
We recommend NANDroid, which takes a proper backup of all of your content. Then the least amount of work when you are done with no root.
What you need?
To get started, you need first and foremost a PC, a USB cable and an Android mobile.
Do you have what you see on the desk here, you are well prepared?
We chose to root the phone from your PC all the way instead of typing a series of commands directly to your phone. This requires that you download the Android Debug Bridge (ADB), which allows you to control the Android phone from your PC, and will be used throughout the rooting process. The program is available for Windows, Mac and Linux.
Download the Android Debug Bridge. Having downloaded this, you must start the program and install the developer tools.
On the web you will find some rooting guide described without ADB. Then you have to enter commands directly on the phone, but apart from that there is nothing in the way by jumping over ADB.
SDK and Android SDK starts Tools must be installed.
To use the ADB, start a command line (terminal) and go to the folder where the Android developer tools installed. For ADB in the “platform tool”, start with the command “adb start-server”. If you have Linux or Mac OS, type “sudo adb start-server”. Then write “adb devices” to check whether you’re mobile is connected.
A little about ROM, bootloader and recovery
What we should be fiddling with now ROM partition on your phone. This is the part of memory that it is intended that you should only read, but you are now going to write when you are installing a new operating system on the phone. This is where the system files in your phone are located.
When you say that you should install a ROM, one usually thinks that you should install a new operating system on that memory.
The first thing you install a bootloader that starts up the operating system of your phone. This is simply a small program that is “outside” of the operating system, and you might know bootloader from the PC world. This is where, for example, can choose to start Windows and Linux on PCs that have both.
Bootloader starts different “images”, which is what is often referred to as a “ROM”. That is a file that contains a larger structure, such as an entire operating system.
The three structures that bootloader starts the “boot image”, “system image” and “radio image”. The first contains the words it takes to get the phone in time, while the “system image” is the operating system. “Radio Image” controls the cell precisely the link in your mobile. These photos will also be replaced by new ones if you should have “custom ROM”, that is a modified version of Android.
When things go wrong
You should also install a separate recovery tool for mobile phones, ensuring you always get installed new ROM straight from your memory card regardless of how wrong everything had to go. Recovery tool is in fact located in ROM, and you can start it by holding down any keys while starting the phone. The user ClockworkMod is a widely used recovery tool for HTC phones.
We recommend strongly having a recovery tool on the phone. You can always install the new ROM is using the PC as well, but it is very convenient to have this opportunity when you do not have an available PC.
A ROM chooses such as ROM tool is also handy because it allows you to switch ROM while on the go. You can install a variety of “mods”. CyanogenMod is a familiar example.
Ready, set, root
There should be enough knowledge about the most basic things you need to deal with when you root, so now it’s time to look at how a normal rooting process takes place.
If you plan to root, we recommend first of all check whether or SuperOneClick Z4root fix steak. These are programs for your computer that will do most of you, and especially SuperOneClick have many phones on their compatibility list.
We recommend you to search the forum.xda-developers.com or Google for how to most easily Rooter to your phone. Here are step by step guides to each phone. There are of course other good sources of guides, such as the CyanogenMod wiki pages.
To understand the processes in the guides means you can, for example, have this guide in a separate window while you are root.
We are here for us the steps of a full rooting process, which involves a recovery tool that allows you to install all kinds of operating systems that are adapted to your mobile. Before you start here, you must have found the instructions for your phone on one of the links above, or by searching your phone on XDA-developers.com.
1: Downgrade
The procedures for rooting made like one of the first firmware versions, and therefore it is sometimes so you have to start by installing an older firmware on your phone. This is usually an easy process.
2: Farewell to the carrier lock
Most have probably not an operator on the phone, but if you have what it requires an extra step before you can root your phone.
Your operator has indeed paid for the phone to lock their mobile network, but it is by no means illegal to do what you want with your own phone. There are different solutions, but we think the most convenient for the HTC phones is to remove the CID lock, while for other mobile brands can, for example, create a Gold Card.
CID stands for “Carrier ID” that identifies carrier and language, and it ensures that you only use the original ROM on your phone. And it will probably not? This must therefore also be removed.
Gold Card contains files that replace the files that lock your phone to the operator. Read more about how to create a Gold Card here »
3: Rooting
Now you will get full access to the phone’s internal software. The most important “safety” that must be removed if you should root really is the “S-ON”, which stands for Security ON. To get full access to flash the firmware and install your own ROM you must get S-OFF.
The S-OFF essentially does is allowing you to use uncertified images of a bootloader, or through a “custom recovery”, that opens the S-OFF, for example that you can install new operating systems.
Note that if phone is as S-OFF, you could shop that refuses to repair the phone.
The entire process takes place mainly by downloading a variety of new installation files from the internet and pushes them into the phone for installation. You do not really do that much, but starting in place programs that do the job.
“. /” Means to perform an action in the folder you are currently in. Most often use the command when you want to implement something. When you root drive you usually install files in this way.
In addition to installing files needed for the root process, then it is advisable to install a recovery tool in the process. It makes it very easy to install the new ROM straight from your memory card on your phone, without having the PC.
Often it takes a long time to run through all the installation files.
4: New ROM
To install a new ROM is usually just by adding a file on the memory card and run it from a recovery solution.
How do you install the ROM varies depending on the recovery solution you use, but if you use ClockworkMod Recovery can be installed by adding a “mod” right on the memory card, then boot in “recovery mode” for installation.
After installation, it may of course be nice to look at the Android-school part 3, where we go through it to make Android phone on your own. We see, for example of the changing “launcher”.
Was something wrong?
Remember that whatever you decide to do, you have access to your phone via ADB program on your PC. So you can fix most things that might go wrong.
