In light of the recent shooting in Las Vegas, planning for event security is now more important than ever. Implementing proper security measures will prevent another tragedy from happening.

Here are some ways to make your event security more stringent.

  1. Review your guest list.

Follow an admittance protocol. If your event is sensitive in nature, make sure that your guests bring their invitations with them upon entering the venue. Check that the guests were properly informed that they should bring their invitations or RSVP at least 24 hours before the event. The plus-ones should also be added to the official guest list.

  1. Carefully choose the venue for the event.

The venue should be able to accommodate the number of people invited with an room  for guests who were invited at the last minute. There should only be one person who can decide whether to allow a person who’s not part of the guest list to enter or not.

  1. Screen the staff as well.

You should review the credentials and job description of the staff that will help out in the event. They should have proper identification to wear all throughout the event.

  1. Avoid surprise inspections.

You should clearly state in the invitation that “all attendees and property are subject to inspection”, and that proper identification is required. Some events implement a “no cellphone policy” so that no one can take pictures or videos and post it in social media.

  1. Don’t be stingy on your budget for security.

If you are planning to cut costs in your budget, don’t sacrifice security measures. Rent or purchase walk-through metal detectors, K-9 sweeps, and many more if possible. If you shop according to price, you will only get sleeping guards and uninvited guests.

  1. Seek the help of experts.

Hire an event planning company that is knowledgeable in dealing with large numbers of people. They should know how to handle any type of situation or threat in a way that will not cause a scene. Look for references and check if they are properly insured. Make sure that they have authentic credentials. Many companies claim that they can help you, but don’t have the right experience or insurance.

Organizers always have their hands full in dealing with several aspects of the event. Security concerns are usually left to the last minute. This is why it’s important to allot adequate time to plan for security measures.
