Around 600,000 meritorious high school students every year, usually most of them are black or Latino, and are poor, have not been able to enroll in the promising courses such as Advanced Placement, which is quite often known to be the head starts for college bound.
In fact there are some students who even do not have an idea about these courses which have been offering productive accelerated curriculum which will assist them in earning college credit. There are several others who self assume that it would be difficult for them to get enrolled. There are many students who are held back due to entrenched perceptions amongst the teachers and administrators, whose referrals play an essential role during admissions; hence those who served for long an elite preserve within the arena of public school have greater chances to get clicked.
In fact, there are several teachers who also believe that these courses or programs are not fit for every student, especially not for those who come from low income backgrounds, color; they won’t quite easily succeed in programs such as these. This was also believed by Education Trust director Christina Theokas that if more number of underrepresented students had participated and had enrolled for AP classes, then there would have been about 614,500 more students present in these classes.
Thus efforts are been taking to remove hindrances such as these and so several schools districts such as Washington, Cincinnati and Boston have started off with initiatives which will assist in growing these programs (Advanced Placement course) and will try to enroll more number of students who are Hispanics or black, Latino, etc, or those children who belong to low income families. There are many amongst them who aspire to be amongst the first to enter University but due to some circumstances they are unable to do so. Hence all these initiatives are being taken so that more number of students gets an opportunity to get enrolled in these classrooms.
This also means that the number of teachers for these advanced courses has to get increased and they would do so, if these initiatives prove to be successful. In one of the schools such as Freedom High Schools, there are many teachers who have started offering tutoring during lunch breaks, some also after school and many on Saturdays so that some extra amount of time can be offered for A.P. students.
