In many houses, garage is also used as a storage room and this cause clutter. It could be filled with tool box, ladder, holiday decorations, fertilizer bags and endless boxes. It is important for homeowners to immediately improve their garage and it shouldn’t cost a lot. In order to properly do this, we should make sure that we have enough time. In fact, it may take the whole weekend to improve our garage. The first thing that we need to do is to take everything out, including every last bottle, nail and can.
Separate driveway into three categories, DONATE/SELL, TRASH and KEEP. This would be an easy decision to take. As an example, our rapidly growing children may no longer need four small bicycles that are stored in the garage. These functional items can be donated or sold. Once we are able to sort everything out, the whole process can be performed much more quickly.
Then, we should refresh the whole garage by adding a new coat of paint in the interior. If our garage is already painted with darker colors, we could choose lighter colors to make it more spacious. The floor can be painted with heavy-duty coating made specifically for garage. Rubber or vinyl sheet could also be used on garage floors. When improving our garage, we should reconsider that it is originally meant for our cars, so it is important to make it clutter-free.
A good way to organize this is by using vertical space and we should be able to store more items in it. We many also put a wall rack for long-handled items, such as ladders, rake, shovel and broom. There should also be places for brush, dustpan, sprinklers and hoses.
After we remove items that need to be thrown away, donated or sold, there should be enough space for a little extra. If there’s a window in the garage, it is a good idea to create a potting station. It should have enough water supply and can be transported easily. We could also use it to cultivate seed and sprouts, before they are re-planted in the garden or lawn. Having some leafy things in our garage could really brighten the space, especially when combined with good lighting and fresh, very bright coat of paint.
Unfortunately, there’s a very likely possibility that our recently improved garage will be cluttered in just a few months. In this case, we should create a few empty storage areas and it is important to make a pact with ourselves to not exceed the capacity. When we need more room, we could repeat the process by choosing items that we can throw away, sell or donate.
Items should be stored more effectively, as an example, bicycles should be suspended under the ceiling or hung on the wall. Finally, we should evaluate our item arrangements in the garage at least once a month and it could take only an hour during the weekend to complete.
