To seek admission into college/universityof your choice is a dream of every student. But the reality is that having applied at numerous universities, you are still turned down or rejected. It is understandable for those with academic underachievement but what about those who possess credible grades? Why them?
It is because admissions team are bombarded with a countless number of applications and it becomes difficult for them to account for every student with high grades and thus, criteria to distinguish which students to allow admission and which to not, becomes blurred.
A university can naturally absorb only so many students. Therefore, students worthy of admission often gets turned away and their hopes of enrolling in college/university are flushed down the drain. And the sad part is, that it is not even their doing. They worked hard to score good grades but to what avail?
That does not mean you have to stop working hard. Grades still matter but the grades are somehow categorized such as those with B’s and C’s are subject to admission at management’s discretion or allowed on aconditional basis. Although, astudent with a B or C is not bad per se but it is not for lack of trying.
Another trouble faced by students is that conditional placements are not recognized. The critics of this practice, where offers are made to students on aconditional basis,call it inappropriate, unreasonable and downright scary too. The reason? Because you are not guaranteed a place, your future hangs in the balance, that’s why.
Apart from these blockades to admission, the pressure it puts on the student is a whole different chapter. Imagine being asked to meet a minimum bench to earn a ticket to your preferred place of study only to find out that the grades earned weren’t enough, enough to get you admittance. The toll such a thing takes on you is unfathomable.
Trying to wait out another year so that you can secure the place in that university is what seems to be the next logical step. The downside to this, however, is that your entire year is wasted and lost time cannot be made up for. Who knows what life will throw at you because a lot of changes occur in a calendar year and this is the mistake students tend to make.
A potential problem is laying all your eggs in one basket, meaning, that students assume since the ranking for a handful of universities is high, it is their only way route to realizing their post-grad dreams. These universities portray as if only certain grades matter while the rest are not worthy.
Thus, it is advisable to keep your options open and not lose heart. I understand that top universities are more likely to guarantee jobs in good organizations and higher pay scales but if you are willing to risk a whole year of your academic life, be my guest because I say this from personal experience; the pause in studies is the worst thing that can happen to you.
For anyone with the commitment and talent, coming out on top even by enrolling for a less demanding university won’t be a problem. I suggest this because instead of wasting a year of your education, it may just happen that you will register as someone who is an overachiever in the university. You can always apply from there for transfer of certain credits and subsequently jump ships to your preferred place of study which you desired in the first place.
Another challenge that students face is admission fee plus a semester’ fee in advance. University studies are expensive and the arrangement of finances can present itself as the biggest problem should you opt for enrolling in a university. You may be successful in applying for college and then getting the offer but unless you deposit the required sum, you cannot sit in classes.
There are a number of universities that require you to submit alongside your past academic records, few years of work experience. In many universities, it is imperative that you have professional experience because a post-graduate study, usually masters or research level studies, entail practical approaches and a person without industry exposure or experience may fail to carry out this feat.
Therefore, if you are willing to enroll in a university, read through its admission policy that whether or not work experience is essential. If it is, you will have to wait and before you can apply. In the meantime, of course, you should look for jobs such as internships and then grow into more permanent positions from thereon.
All of it will be counted towards your professional experience and letter(s) of reference serves the purpose. So, yes, in a way this can pose aproblem for students who cannot work jobs in their chosen field of study.
