Vellore is situated about 145 kilometres west of the Chennai and about 211 kilometres east of Bangalore. It is situated on the banks of river Palar in the north-eastern face of Tamil Nadu. The word Vellore has been derived from a combination of two words, the word velmeans spear which is considered to be weapon of Hindu godMuruganand oor- means place. According to the Hindu mythology, Lord Murugan is described as a tribal hunter who appeared in a lotus pond with his weapon to attack the enemies. Thus “Vellore” is seen as the place where Lord Murugan appeared. There is another belief that the region was enclosed by Velan trees (Babul trees), hence the place was called Vellore. This city has been run by various rulers from Pallavas, Cholas, Vijayanagar Empire, Rashtrakutas, Carnatic kingdom, and the British.

Srilakshmi Golden Temple: This temple situated in Sripuram is also known by the name Lakshmi Narayani temple. The amazing feature of the temple is the gold leaf coating of the entire structure.  It is a modern architectural wonder.

VainuBappu Observatory: VainuBappu Observatory is an astronomical observatory situated at an altitude of 700 meters above sea level. Often called as the telescope city, the observatory is built on the huge area of around 100 acre forest and has a 93 inch telescope, one of the largest in Asia. It has gained worldwide fame for various groundbreaking scientific theories and discoveries.

Yelagiri: Its a beautiful hill station in Vellore. The town is placed at the centre of flowery meadows, tea estates and orchards.
