Because they’re often smaller-sized spaces, designing or re-designing a bedroom is often a simpler task than other rooms in your house. It seems quite simple – you need a bed, some storage, a little furniture and some lighting.

However, if you’re approaching a project, there are also some common mistakes that you need to avoid making. Fitted bedroom experts DM Design have created this list of common bedroom design mistakes, so you know exactly what to avoid!

Choosing lively colours. Some colours encourage sleep better than others, with muted blues having the most impact. Avoid brighter colours like yellow, which has been known to over-stimulate, and even cause anxiety.

Not blocking out the light. Darkness is one of the keys to a good night’s sleep, so in your redesign, make sure you give yourself the best chance. Make sure part of your design changes includes either blackout blinds or thick curtains – something to block out the light.

Failing to have a focal point. Even your bedroom should have a focal point that draws the eye to it. Whether it’s the bed set against a bright backdrop, an amazing mirror or a vintage wardrobe, you need something in the room that’s attention-grabbing.

Matching too many things. Having too many things – walls, bedding, curtains – the same colour is a missed opportunity for playful colour choices and can be overwhelming to the eye. It’s best to mix things up. If you don’t feel confident keep the walls a bright white and just add colour-pop curtains, rugs and throws.

Failing to consider storage. A key thing to avoid in your bedroom is clutter, so lots of opportunities for storage are a must. You have plenty of options in the bedroom for storage. Whether you choose attractive storage that can double-up and be displayed, or you opt for hidden storage underneath the bed – make sure you have more than you need!
