It is a well known fact that successful students are much less distracted by social networking website, especially Facebook. In fact, Facebook is a very intrusive part of our modern lifestyle and many people receive constant notifications of Facebook updates. A couple of minutes can turn into a couple of hours, if we are not able to resist the temptation. According to studies, students who are active in social networking websites study fewer hours and they gain consistently lower grades. Facebook users could study less than one hour each day and the platform could ruin educational performance. Our time on Facebook should be diverted to effective studying and proper assignments. Students should know whether they are addicted to Facebook. As an example, they should know how often they check Facebook.

The Distraction Of Facebook

It could become rather serious if students check their Facebook accounts so many times each day they lose count. It is also not acceptable spending more than one hour in total every day one Facebook. Facebook is considered as a distraction if students spend more time on the social networking website than they do studying. One sign of Facebook addiction is when students check Facebook first before studying. Students shouldn’t have Facebook running on the background during study, because this could cause significant distraction. In fact, some students can’t resist the temptation of checking Facebook during a lesson or lecture. The more appropriate time to check Facebook is when students have finished their tasks for the day. It is important to avoid getting too involved in conversations in Facebook to reduce the urge of checking replies.

Successful students have the ability to resist from being distracted. Many students can easily distracted by Facebook, while others are addicted and this has affected their school performance. Some are so obsessed with Facebook that they need to change their ways. There are methods students can use to avoid becoming distracted by Facebook. They can keep a log to know when the study sessions start and end during the day. During these sessions, it is unacceptable to even take a quick glance on the Facebook account. By keeping a log, it could be surprising to know how much attention-switching we are doing due to Facebook. Many students have close friends and they can ask friends to change the password until after exam. There is software that can block websites from running in web browsers, so it is important to install it. It can be protected with password and we can also ask friends to type in the password until specified date.

If Facebook addiction has become so serious, it could be necessary to temporarily disable the account, by choosing the “Deactivate Account” option. When the time is right, we can reactivate the account and all photos and list of friends will be recovered. True friends could stay in contact via email and phone, so we won’t miss out. Facebook is only a social tool, it shouldn’t become something that poisons our productivity.
