A college student in Texas was shot and killed by campus police over the weekend. The 23 year old Honors student was Robert Cameron Redus, who is from Baytown, Texas, allegedly took the officers baton and began hitting him with it. This comes from a statement made by the college on Monday, the University of the Incarnate Word. According to the statement, Corporal Chris Carter, of the University Police Department, shot Redus three or more times sometime Friday morning. The incident took place at an apartment complex off-campus in Alamo Heights. Carter was placed on administrative leave while an investigation is taking place. However, this is paid leave and is standard procedure in an event like this.

redusRedus was a honors student and was a communication arts major and a senior. The University of the Incarnate Word, which his one of the largest Catholic colleges in the United States, and is located in San Antonio, Texas. Robert Cameron Redus was also an anchor for the campus television station, UIWTV and there are still some of his material on YouTube. This is obviously a major tragedy and one that makes you wonder what exactly happened in that parking lot of that off campus apartment building. The university said that although the area that the incident happened was off campus, the university police department regularly patrolled the area, because of how many college students live there.

University police departments regularly patrol areas around campus and in some areas that are not necessarily located on campus, and these days, campus police departments have the same police powers as other agencies. It is unclear just how the incident happened, or whether alcohol or drugs were involved, but classmates said that Redus was friendly, and couldn’t believe that he had gotten violent with the police. “He was such a sweet boy, very sweet, very respectful,” said Terri Mullins, a student. “He always had a smile on his face.”
