Summer is rapidly approaching, which for most people means holidays, sun, bbqs and having fun outdoors. Unfortunately, the warmer weather also brings with it hoards of insects and other pests, all looking to make a home in and around your property.  Getting an annual pest control inspection is one way to keep these critters at bay, however there are ways you can also pest-proof you and your family to ensure you can enjoy yourselves, no matter the time of year.

One of the most effective ways to ensuring your home stays bug free is to prevent them from gaining access.  You can do this in various ways, but if your property does not have fly wire protection for windows and sliding doors, you might want to consider investing in them this summer.  Fly wire screens are a relatively easy pest control solution because they can be retroactively installed in homes.  They will keep out flies, ants and mosquitos, spiders and midges, and the only thing you have to worry about is keeping the screen doors closed over the warmer months (a challenge especially if you have kids!).  Don’t forget also to clean your home free from food debris and unwashed dishes – this can act like a lure for certain insects such as ants and cockroaches, and rodents such as rats and mice.

Mosquitos and midges breed in stagnate pools of water, including puddles, rain water tanks, children’s paddling pools and any pot plant dishes you may have around your home.  The best way to ensure you’re not providing the perfect home for these nasty pests is to do a regular inspection of your property and clean out any dirty water.  You should clean out your rain water tank regularly to prevent mosquito larvae from developing into adult mosquitos.  This is particularly important in the tropical areas of Australia such as Northern NSW and Queensland where there is heavy rainfall, but also where it is known that mosquitos are more likely to transmit dangerous diseases such as Dengue and Ross River Virus.

Giving your property a good once over when it comes to overhanging trees, overgrown undergrowth or out of control weeds can be an effective way to prevent any nasties such as spiders getting comfortable.  For most people, doing a garden clean up once or twice a year will be enough to keep down the number of pests, however for those in warmer climates with faster growing foliage, this maybe necessary more often.  Spiders – especially poisonous ones such as Red Backs and Funnel Webs – can be dangerous for your whole family, and it is a good idea to book a pest control company such as Pest-Ex to come and thoroughly inspect your property regularly. Pest-Ex provide professional pest control services in Brisbane and the Gold Coast.

Don’t let pests ruin your summer.  Giving you home a good clean, maintaining your garden, considering adding fly screens to your windows and doors and getting a regular pest control inspection from a professional will be the most effective ways to keep bugs out of your home.
