Components of a solar power system

  1. Solar Panels

The most popular type of solar panel widely used, especially for installation in the houses for power is the photovoltaic or PV panels. This panel consists of three layers as-

  • N-Layer- The layer is made of silicon mixed along with phosphorus element.
  • P/N Junction- The layer of PV panel is made of pure silicon element.
  • P-Layer – The layer consist of silicon mixed with the boron element.

The electrons present in the N-Layer of the PV panel are knock-out when the light energy from the sun strikes the layer.  The loose electrons then passes through the second layer i.e., the P/N junction and then into the last one namely the P-Layer. By doing so, an electric field is created, which drives the knock-out electrons. Thus electric current is produced.

The DC electric current produced by the solar energy is converted into AC current, which is suitable for the use in household using a device called the inverter.

The DC current is flipped forwards and backwards 50 times per minute by using solid state switches (i.e., series of switches), thus creating the Alternating current commonly known as AC current.

  1. Battery

Most of the solar power systems also consist of a battery that stores the excess electric energy that is needed for their household or any other purposes. The energy stored in the battery can be used at times of need.

  1. Distributor

The device that is used for distributing the AC current or power from the inverter output to both the grid and your home is known as the distributor. The inverter output is fed into a dedicated breaker of the electric panel of your house, then linked to your house.
